About Sagay City

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION

The 66th city in the Philippines, Sagay straddles a good portion of the Northernmost tip of the island of Negros. Located at the latitude of 10 degrees 53 minutes and 50.52 seconds and longitude of 123 degrees, 24 minutes and 52.75 seconds. It is bounded in the North by Asuncion Pass and Visayan sea; West by Cities of Cadiz and Silay; East by the City of Escalante and Municipality of Toboso; South by the City of Talisay and Municipality of Calatrava. It is approximately 84 kms. from Bacolod City which is the Provincial Capital.


LAND CLASSIFICATION AND PROTECTED AREAS

Sagay Marine Reserve is located at 10 57′ 28″ – 123 21’42’- 10 57′ 41″ – 123 22′ 14′ in the map.
It is about 32,000 hectare and covers the islands of Molocaboc, Diut, Matabas and Suyac including then surrounding reefs and the reefs of Carbin, Macahulom and Panal.
In 1995, the passage of Presidential Proclamation 592 declaring approximately 32,000 hectares of Sagay’s territorial water as protected seascape under
the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS) Act institutionalized the protection efforts.
Another legislation providing for stricter enforcement of the law at the protected area was authored
by the Congressman Alfredo G. Marañon, Jr. and passed by Congress as Republic Act. No. 9106,
“An Act for the Establishment and Management of Sagay Marine Reserve, defining its Scope, coverage and for other purposes”
which was subsequently signed into law in April 4, 2001.
Sagay Marine Reserve is being managed by a Protected Area Management Board (PAMBI).
It is now nationally and internationally recognized as of the most sustained marine conservation programs in the Philippines.

Season in Sagay is not very pronounced; relatively dry from Movember to April and wet during the rest of the year.
