BARANGAY MAQUILING


HISTORY

   Many years ago, there was a small settlement located in the rolling hills of the Municipality of Sagay. The place was covered with thick vegetation and trees and people come to visit the place and later decided to dwell. These people who first migrated called the place SAPLAD. Later on, through the efforts of a civic-spirited group, a school was built which encouraged more people to settle and owned lands. One of the first settlers was Crispin Maquiling, member of the Philippine Constabulary and who later became the barrio lieutenant. His leadership was looked upon by the people, being their good leader that they decided to name the place “Maquiling” in his honor. Today, the place continues to flourish as Sagay progresses to become a fully developed city in Negros Occidental.


PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS


Location:

Barangay Maquiling is located in South Eastern of Sagay City. It is 16.5 kilometers away from Poblacion of Sagay City. The barangay proper has an elevation of 110 meters above sea level per record of NAMRIA. It is bounded on the North Western by Barangay Baviera; on the North Eastern by Barangay Bato, both of Sagay City; on the South Eastern by Barangay Dian-ay, Escalante City and on the South Western by Barangay Puey and Barangay Colonia Divina, both of Sagay City.

Area:

Barangay Maquiling has a total land area of 1,011.3400 hectares. Based on the latest Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) of City of Sagay for the period of 2006 to 2015. The land area is classified, as follows, to wit:

Agricultural 937.5618 hectares
Institutional 5.9336 hectares
Light Industrial 0.2000 hectares
Parks, Open Space & Easement 45.8400 hectares

Type of Soil:

Guimbala-on Clay, Luciana Clay, La Castellana Clay Loam and Fara-on Clay Steep Phase.

Climate:

Sagay City has a tropical climate with season not very pronounced, relatively dry from November to April and wet during the rest of the year.

SOCIO-DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS


Population:

Based on the Census Population conducted by Philippine Statistic Authority (formerly NSO) Barangay Maquiling has a total population, as follows, to wit;

Population Density:

Per computation as of latest Census Population the population density of Barangay Maquiling is 4 persons/hectare or 400 persons/square kilometer.

Registered Voters:

Barangay Maquiling has a total registered voters of 2,512, with fifteen (15) precinct numbers as of July 30, 2016 per record of Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Sagay City.

Religion:

About sixty percent is devoted Catholic while forty percent belonging to the Protestants, Mormons and Iglesia ni Cristo.

Dialects:

Principal dialect is Ilonggo, however, the population are able to speak Cebuano, Tagalog and English.

Labor and Employment:

The bulk of labor force is engage in agriculture and farming of sugarcane is their prime product. During off-season, they engaged in planting of root crops, vegetables and other short term products that could easily generate money.


ECONOMIC PROFILE


Barangay Maquiling is one of the rural barangay of Sagay City and its main economy is based on agriculture and the dominant crop is sugarcane. Eighty percent of its total land area is classified as agriculture lands. Other major crops are rice, corn and bananas. It is also abundant with sand and gravel and is the second producer among the barangays.

One satellite market of Sagay City was established in Sitio Bago, this barangay. It has a scheduled market day every Saturday where products from the city proper and hinterland barangays of Sagay and Escalante met.

Record showed at NEGOSYO CENTER (One Stop Shop Office ) of Sagay City, Barangay Maquiling has a total of twelve (12) approved business license permits for the year 2016. There are three (3) Meat Retailers, two (2) Hardware Dealers, two (2) Sari-Sari Stores Retailers, one (1) Bakeshop Retailer/Processor, one (1) Gasoline Retailer, one (1) Rice & Corn Retailer, one (1) Trucking Services and one (1) Lumber (Buy & Sell) Dealer.

EDUCATION FACILITIES


Barangay Maquiling has only one (1) Public school which is Maquiling Elementary School with a total enrollees of 652 students. Preparatory level has 65 students and Elementary level has 587 students, per record of Department of Education, Division of Sagay, as of school year 2016-2017.


HEALTH FACILITIES


The barangay has one (1) Health Station located in the heart of the barangay proper manned by one (1) midwife, fifteen (15) Barangay Health Workers . It has four (4) Day Care Centers manned by four (4) Day Care Workers and has one (1) Barangay Nutrition Scholar.


RESETTLEMENT SITE


Record from the City Planning Development Office as of 2015, Barangay Maquiling has one (1) Resettlement Site located at Sitio Bago, containing a total area of development of 1.50000 hectares, with total number of saleable lots of 87 and awarded to qualified beneficiaries.


INFRASTRUCTURES


Transportation:

The area is reachable via tricycles, jeepneys and buses. It has concreted roads that connect the barangay from the heart of the city to upland barangays.

Power Supply:

Barangay Maquiling has a 24-hour electricity supplied by VRESCO covering all sitios and puroks. An estimated of only 20% of the total households in the barangay have no power source/ connections.

Water Supply:

The barangay has level I, II, and III water supply system. Seventy (70%) of the total households are having house to house connection, 10% are served by commercial faucet and 20% get their drinking water requirements from springs and other sources.

Communication:

Telecommunications are available through cellular phones and radio handsets.
